A LITTLE MORE NIGHT MUSIC
This short series evolved from a linoprint transcription that I made based on a small section from Dorothea Tanning's 1943 painting, 'Eine Kleine Nachtmusik'. I wanted to follow up on ideas that I had had whilst making the first print. I had thought to myself, 'What is behind that door?' This inspired me to imagine and design where I thought the girl in the painting may travel to. Without being too ambitious, due to the fact that these were a few of the first linoprints I made, I began to design each block.
The sunflower on the stairs in Tanning's original painting appeared to be dead. I wondered if this was because it was in our world and that maybe in the world behind the door, sunflowers eerily dominated the scenery. I wanted to continue pursuing the dreamlike qualities conjured up in Tanning's painting and so decided to lead the girl through a world of sunflower forests, stairways to heaven and The Shining inspired corridors.
